Semaglutide: What to Know

Semaglitude Overview

Written by Javier Rodriguez

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It works with your body's natural GLP-1 hormone to reduce appetite and help you feel fuller for longer, which supports weight loss as part of your treatment plan.

What are the side effects of Semaglutide?

The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, and indigestion. These are usually mild and typically improve on their own.

If you experience severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, severe dizziness, or any other life-threatening condition, call your local emergency number immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.

What foods should I avoid while taking Semaglutide?

Tolerance varies by person, but these categories commonly worsen side effects:

  • High-fat and greasy foods: fried chicken, red meat, cheese, peanut butter, nuts, butter, oil.

  • Alcohol: can worsen nausea and GI discomfort.

  • High-sugar foods and drinks: soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages.

  • High-glycemic foods: white bread, processed cereals.

  • Ultra-processed foods: fast food, packaged snacks, sweetened cereals.

Alcoholic Beverages

Alcohol can worsen the side effects of Semaglutide, particularly nausea and GI discomfort. It is advisable to avoid wine, beer, and liquor while taking the medication.

High-Sugar Foods and Drinks

High-sugar foods and drinks, such as soda and sugar-sweetened beverages, should be limited or avoided altogether. These foods can increase blood sugar levels and potentially worsen the side effects of Semaglutide.

High-Glycemic Index Foods

Foods with a high glycemic index, which cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, should be minimized.

Ultra-Processed Foods

Ultra-processed foods, which are typically high in fat, sugar, and additives, should be avoided. These foods can worsen side effects and contribute to overall health issues.

What is compounded Semaglutide?

Compounded Semaglutide is a version of the medication prepared for you by a licensed compounding pharmacy, rather than a commercially manufactured product. Compounding pharmacies work with your doctor to prepare medication tailored to individual needs.

This practice of creating tailored medicine is regulated, safe, and common practice and can be beneficial for patients with specific needs.

Message your doctor if you have questions about your specific medication.
